CAR BUSHINGS AND SUSPENSION

Car bushings are small rubber or polyurethane suspension components that are used to isolate vibration, provide cushioning, and reduce friction between metal parts on your vehicle. The most common car bushings are control arm bushings (also known as A-arm bushings or wishbone bushings) and sway bar bushings, but you will also find bushings positioned between your vehicle's suspension and frame in several other areas.

Looking for the ultimate resource on car repair services and maintenance battery replacement? Look no further than Completely Firestone – we've got your answers.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I REPLACE MY BUSHINGS?

Because car bushings are made of flexible materials like rubber and polyurethane you can expect them to naturally expire over time. Usually this expiration comes as a result of extended compression, or compound deterioration that occurs naturally as a result of extreme weather and contact with chemicals like motor oil. How frequently your bushings need to be replaced will vary largely depending on your driving conditions and driving style.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY BUSHINGS NEED TO BE REPLACED?

Since bushings isolate vibration and reduce friction between metal parts, the sound of failing bushings is usually not subtle. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms consider it a good indication that your suspension bushings may be due (or overdue) for replacement:

  • Excess vibration and road noise in the cabin of your vehicle
  • Friction sounds like creaks or banging coming from the wheel fenders
  • Any kind of frame rattling upon impact (from bumps or other rough road terrain)
  • Overly loose steering

BUSHING REPLACEMENT

Like every other part in your suspension system, it's better to replace bushings before they fail. For this reason Firestone Complete Auto Care always includes bushing inspection as part of our Steering and Suspension Services as well as our Alignment services.

For more information about bushing diagnostics, the importance of bushings, or suspension system maintenance contact a Firestone Complete Auto Care tire and auto service professional online, by telephone, or by stopping into one of our 1700-plus Firestone Complete Auto Care stores.
