WHAT IS THE POWER STEERING PUMP?
Modern vehicles have either hydraulic power steering or electric power steering. A power steering pump is an important component of the steering system in a vehicle with hydraulic power steering. It is responsible for pressurizing and moving hydraulic fluid through the rack and pinion and ensuring steering is smooth and seamless. As the fluid is transferred through a hose to the pump, the pressurized hydraulic fluid is sent to the rack and pinion helping turn the wheels before flowing through another line and returning to the pump to be pressurized again, and the cycle continues.
Typically an electric power steering system uses a motor to assist with steering, so it usually doesn’t have a traditional power steering pump.
WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR CAR’S POWER STEERING PUMP
A power steering pump replacement is necessary when you start noticing signs that it’s not working as efficiently as it used to. Your vehicle may be hard to steer, or you notice a loud whining noise as you turn the steering wheel. Most pumps can be expected to last 100,000 miles or more, but their longevity depends. If you notice any of these signs, it may be time to consider a power steering pump replacement.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO REPLACE THE POWER STEERING PUMP?
The cost of replacing a power steering pump will vary based on your vehicle’s make and model. Expect to pay anywhere between $100 to $400 for the pump alone and add on the cost of skilled labor.
