WHY DOES TIRE SIZE MATTER?
Some believe that rims are just about aesthetics, but they are also an essential component of your wheel construction. If you’re getting new rims but not new tires, you’ll want to make sure you know the rim size to ensure your current tires will fit properly. Choosing the wrong size rims could lead to problems with suspension and damage to your car. Here’s how to find your car’s rim size—or measure it yourself.
HOW TO READ TIRE RIM SIZE
One way to determine the rim size for your vehicle is to look at the alphanumeric tire size code located in the owner’s manual, driver’s side door jamb, or inside the glove box door. Look for a code like P215/65 R15 95H. In this example, the R15 is telling you that your vehicle was originally equipped with 15-inch rims. Rim size and tire size go hand in hand—if you have 15-inch rims, you’ll need 15-inch tires.
If you already have tires on your vehicle, you can also find this number on the sidewall of the tire. It’s usually safe to say that rim size will continue to work for your car. Our tire size guide can help you understand how to read tire size.
HOW TO MEASURE TIRE RIM SIZE
If you currently have tires, there’s no need to measure your rims. Simply look for the tire size code and go from there. If you just have empty rims that you need to measure, you may be able to find the dimensions somewhere along a back spoke along with the factory numbers or engraved into the inside of the barrel.
If you want to measure for yourself, here’s what to check:
