How to rotate tires: Tire rotation patterns
There are a few different ways a set of tires can be rotated. The right tire rotation pattern for your vehicle depends on the type of tires you have, whether your vehicle is front, rear, or four-wheel drive, whether your tires are directional or non-directional, and the size of all your tires. You can find the right tire rotation pattern for your vehicle in your owner’s manual. Here are the most common tire rotation patterns:
Rearward Cross
- Tires that are uniform in size and non-directional
- 4-wheel, all-wheel, rear-wheel drive vehicles
- Rear tires stay on the same side and move to the forward axle; front tires move to the rear axle and the opposite side
X-Pattern
- Tires that are uniform in size and non-directional
- Front-wheel drive vehicles like light trucks and sedans
- All four tires are moved diagonally (switch axle and side)
Forward Cross
- Tires that are uniform in size and non-directional
- Most common for front-wheel drive vehicles
- Front tires stay on the same side and move to the rear axle; rear tires move to the front axle and the opposite side
Front-to-Rear
- Directional tires
- All tires moved from one axle to the other but remain on the same side of the vehicle.
Side-to-Side
- High performance tires
- All tires switch with the tire of the same size and remain on the same axle.
